In an effort to reduce financial barriers, we offer sliding scale pricing on select Circle Yoga programs. The Reduced Rate is for those facing financial hardship, the Standard Rate is our usual fee that covers costs including teacher pay, and the Pay It Forward Rate helps cover fellow students who need to pay less. If you need to pay less than the Reduced Rate, partial scholarships are also available. No one will be turned away for financial reasons.

Receiving a cancer diagnosis is often hard and can be shocking and confusing. Mindfulness practices can help us see past our initial fears and open us up to the many conditions for happiness still in our lives. Practicing with a community will help us create lasting positive changes and provide a safe place to share our challenges, insights, and joys.

Each week we will practice mindful deep relaxation, learn how mindfulness can support our journey, do some gentle movement, and share in small and large groups about our experiences. All sharing will be confidential and the only requirement to attend is that you have been in cancer treatment at some point in your life. Join us for all four classes, or drop in as you are able.

About the instructor: In addition to being a dharma teacher in the zen tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh, Annie has been through and continues treatment for endometrial cancer and Chronic Myloid Leukemia, CML, and lives with the genetic marker for cancer known as Lynch Syndrome. She is offering this class because of the many ways that this practice has given meaning and ease to her own cancer journey.

This series will be taught in a hybrid format, so participants can join in person or online. Sessions will not be recorded.

Annie Mahon

Annie is the founder of Budding Yogis (2003) which became Circle Yoga, and she is the co-founder of DC Community Yoga / DC Yoga Week, Yoga on the National Mall, and the Opening Heart Mindfulness Community. Annie has been active in much of the grassroots community yoga and mindfulness activities in the Washington DC Area. She has been a student of yoga and mindfulness since the 1990's and a teacher since 2001 — and has most recently received the dharma lamp transmission at a ceremony at Plum Village France. She is also a writer and published her second book, Things I Did When I Was Hangry: Navigating a Peaceful Relationship with Food with Parallax Press in 2015. Annie holds masters degrees in both Computer Science, from the University of Michigan, and Religious Studies from Howard University. She was ordained by her mindfulness teacher, Thich Nhat Hanh, in 2009 with the ordination name True Blue Lake, and became a licensed massage therapist in 2011.

Annie's first yoga teacher training was with Suzie Hurley at Willow Street Yoga Center in 2004, and Annie was one of the country's first certified Children's Yoga teachers. She is a certified Focusing professional and has studied and practiced Nonviolent Communication (NVC), witchcraft, trauma-informed clinical practice, and many other modalities.

In 2010, Annie created The Pink House Foundation, giving grants to social justice organizing for frontline communities. Annie transformed the Circle Yoga LLC into a worker-owned cooperative in 2014 because she is a strong supporter of cooperative economics and democratic governance. She is especially interested in how to redistribute land, wealth and power.
