$45.00 Yoga For Healthy Bones - Spring 2021
This workshop is designed for those with osteoporosis or osteopenia and anyone who wants to build stronger and healthier bones. We will begin with an overview of osteoporosis and details of how practicing yoga can safely counteract thinning bones. You will then learn and practice poses that have been shown to build bone mineral density and reduce the risk of falling. The core is a 12-pose sequence developed by Dr. Loren Fishman and Ellen Saltonstall. Regular practice of these poses can help prevent fractures and improve balance, posture, core strength, and bone strength. The workshop will provide you with sequence suggestions and other tools you can use to develop your own home routine plus some dietary suggestions.
The poses can be adapted for all levels, although some basic yoga experience is helpful. The workshop can serve as both an introduction to building stronger bones and a refresher for those who have taken a healthy bones class before.
Debbie began practicing yoga in 1997 to help her body feel stronger and more flexible, and to learn to calm her mind. As yoga became a more integral part of her life, she wanted to share its benefits with others. She completed her 200-hour teacher training through Willow Street Yoga in 2005 and the Budding Yogis Certification program at Circle Yoga the following year. Since 2006, Debbie has been studying ParaYoga with Rod Stryker and draws inspiration from him, Marion Griffin, and yoga teachers at the Himalayan Institute. Debbie holds her RYT-500 through ParaYoga, and she is certified by the National Ayurveda Medical Association (NAMA) as an Ayurvedic Health Counselor. She is also certified to teach Dr. Loren Fishman's Method of Yoga for Osteoporosis.
In addition to teaching group classes, Debbie offers private consultations in both yoga and Ayurveda. She provides her private clients with recommendations regarding diet and lifestyle, as well as asanas, breathing, and meditation practices. One of her specialties is leading seasonal Ayurvedic cooking workshops.
What to expect in class
Debbie's classes have a friendly, comfortable, and light-hearted feel. She focuses on helping students build core stability and strength, improve balance, and find more ease in their bodies. Debbie is particularly skilled in working with students who have limitations, conditions, or just creaky bodies that require a little extra attention. She offers props and modifications to ensure that each student can maintain stability, good alignment, and safety. Debbie also emphasizes the importance of breath awareness and breathing practices (pranayama) that guide students to a state of inner calm and mindfulness.
